Wheat Straw Dinnerware: Why Quality Matters
Wheat straw dinnerware has become increasingly popular as families look for alternatives to traditional plastics. You’ll now find “wheat straw plates” everywhere — from large retailers like Kmart to marketplaces like Amazon. But while the name may be the same, the quality and materials can vary significantly.
What Is Wheat Straw Dinnerware?
Wheat straw is a byproduct of wheat harvesting — the stalk left behind once the grain is collected. Instead of burning or discarding this agricultural waste, it can be repurposed and blended with food-safe materials to create durable dinnerware.
When done well, wheat straw plates offer a lightweight, reusable, and more environmentally conscious alternative to traditional plastic dinnerware.
Not All Wheat Straw Plates Are the Same
One of the biggest differences between wheat straw products is how much wheat straw is actually used.
At Elavoland, our plates are made from 70% repurposed wheat straw fibre, combined with 30% high-quality food-safe polypropylene (PP) to provide strength and durability.
With many mass-produced products sold online, the percentage of wheat straw can be much lower — sometimes as little as 5–20%. In these cases, the product is often still marketed as “wheat straw dinnerware,” even though the majority of the material may be conventional plastic.
Because this information isn’t always clearly listed, it can be difficult for consumers to know exactly what they’re buying.
Material Safety and Transparency
Another important consideration is what additives or materials are used in the manufacturing process.
Quality brands will clearly state whether their dinnerware is:
BPA free
Melamine free
Food-safe and tested
Made with known material blends
Without this information, it can be harder for families to feel confident about what they’re using every day — particularly around children.
Thickness and Durability
Another difference you may notice when comparing wheat straw plates is thickness and overall feel.
Some lower-cost options can feel thinner or slightly more flexible. While they may still be dishwasher safe and perfectly functional, they may not feel as solid or long-lasting for everyday family use.
At Elavoland, our plates are designed with a thicker, sturdier construction so they can handle real family life — busy kitchens, outdoor meals, and the occasional drop.
Designed for Everyday Family Life
Our goal at Elavoland is to create dinnerware that families truly enjoy using every day.
That means designing pieces that are:
Lightweight but sturdy
Non-toxic and family-safe
Made with a high percentage of plant-based material
Durable enough to last for years
Beautiful enough to make everyday meals feel special
A Small Switch with a Big Impact
Choosing reusable dinnerware made from repurposed plant fibres helps reduce reliance on conventional plastics while giving agricultural waste a second life.
And while wheat straw plates from different brands may look similar at first glance, understanding the materials, quality, and transparency behind them can help you choose products that are safer, longer lasting, and better for your home.
