FAQ

What is PLA and bamboo fibre dinnerware?

PLA (polylactic acid) is a plant-based material made from renewable resources like corn or sugarcane. We combine 90% PLA with 10% bamboo fibre, a fast-growing natural material that adds strength and reduces reliance on fossil fuels. The result is durable, lightweight dinnerware made completley from plants.

Is it considered plastic?

No - our dinnerware is 100% plastic-free and made from renewable plant-based materials rather than petroleum. It’s designed as a lower-impact alternative to traditional plastic products.

Why is PLA a more sustainable option?

Unlike conventional plastics made from fossil fuels, PLA comes from renewable crops that can be regrown year after year. Blending it with bamboo fibre further reduces environmental impact while creating a strong, practical material for everyday use.

Can it go in the dishwasher or microwave?

It’s dishwasher safe (top rack recommended) and perfect for everyday meals. We recommend avoiding the microwave for very high heat and choose a low or medium heat setting, as PLA is a plant-based material and performs best under normal serving conditions.

We’ve tested our dinnerware for short microwave reheats (up to 1 minute on low power), and it performed well. However, longer heating times or higher temperatures may cause the material to warp or develop cracks over time, so gentle reheating is recommended. If you are a heavy microwave user then we recommend our wheat straw dinnerware which can handle the heat a lot better.

Are they scratch resistant?

Like most plastic dinnerware, our plant-based plates and bowls can develop scratches over time, particularly when sharp knives are used with heavy pressure.

While our dinnerware is designed to look and feel like stoneware, it's not intended to be used as a chopping board - although we agree that would be incredibly convenient!

For foods that require firm cutting, such as steak, we recommend slicing them on a chopping board first or using less aggressive knives where possible. A little extra care will help keep your dinnerware looking beautiful for years to come.

Creating dinnerware that is lightweight, durable, and resistant to breaking when dropped - while still maintaining the beautiful appearance of stoneware - does involve some trade-offs. For us, it's a compromise worth making.

Rather than relying on additional surface coatings, we've focused on creating a product that is simple, durable, and made from thoughtfully selected plant-based materials, giving families a beautiful and practical option for everyday use.

Will it stain?

Because our dinnerware is made from plant-based materials (PLA and bamboo fibre), it can be more prone to staining from strongly coloured foods like pasta sauce, curry, beetroot, - especially if food is left sitting for long periods.

The good news? Most everyday marks wash away easily with a normal dishwasher cycle or warm, soapy water. To help keep your pieces looking their best, we recommend rinsing soon after use and avoiding long soaks with deeply pigmented foods. We have tested our dinnerware with pasta sauce and berries and have not had a problem it all washed off without any marks.

Because life is messy and if you do get odd marks on them then using bicarbonate of soda and water will get the stains off, most of the time.

A little love goes a long way — and any tiny signs of use are just proof of many happy meals shared 💛

Is PLA and bamboo fibre dinnerware safe for everyday use?

Yes! Our dinnerware is food-safe, BPA-free, phthalate-free, non-toxic, and odourless. It’s designed for daily family life, giving you peace of mind at every meal.

Is it durable?

Absolutely. Thanks to high-quality materials and a specialised manufacturing process, this dinnerware is lightweight yet strong, making it ideal for kids, outdoor dining, and everyday use.

Is it compostable?

Yes - it’s 100% compostable in commercial composting facilities. Because it’s designed to be durable, it needs the high heat of an industrial composting system to properly break down. It won’t compost effectively in a home compost bin.

Why choose plant-based dinnerware?

Choosing PLA and bamboo fibre helps reduce reliance on fossil fuels while still giving you long-lasting, practical dinnerware for your family. It’s a small switch that supports a more sustainable future.
