Tip #1: Add your personal touches

While it is your baby’s room, you will be their for many carer for many years and until their personalities have started to come though you, there is probably space to still add your own personal touch - also so they can get to know you from the get go. If you have a favourite vase, clock, lamp or throw they would be great to add to your baby’s room anything that sparks joy.

Photographs of when you were pregnant and with your partner or even your wedding photos are great touches also to remind you of some of the joyous moments in your life. You can also keep adding special photos of your little one as they grow, they will also enjoy looking back at the photos when they grow older, even if they think it’s someone else.

Tip #2: Choose your artwork

Adding some artwork will bring your baby’s room to life. Easy choices are to get some prints and include them in affordable and good quality frames from Kmart. There are also removal wall stickers, that won’t damage your wall if you don’t want to screw holes into your walls, there is a wide choice and you can also update them quite easily as your baby grows and their interests develop.

Popular ideas are jungle animals, flowers and farm animals.

Tip#3: Decorate with rugs, toys and blankets

While some may say you can put a baby in a dresser draw others may differ and if you don’t have what you need then you will need to get some new things. Babies are expensive and selecting the new things that you need in your nursery can be considered purchases.

Rugs, toys, cushions and unique toys are great ways and often in expensive ways to decorate.

Here are some blankets and other baby items that you could decorate with.

Tip #4: Don’t forget colour, it’s great for development.

Often the first idea that comes to mind is to have pink features or girls and blue for boys but the colour that you add to your baby’s room could be so much more than that.

You may notice that kids gravitate to colours. A colourful environment stimulates creativity and fuels the imagination of a child. The variety of colours in their surroundings encourages them to think creatively, fostering a sense of wonder and innovation.

When you turn the lights out the colours will also fade with a night light for a more calming affect.

Another benefit of adding colour here and there is that in about 10 months your baby will be nearing the toddler stage and sadly they won’t be a baby anymore. Choosing to have a bit more colour will have more longevity as when they are older the neutral or baby pastels become a bit obsolete.

You may want to avoid having a ‘sad beige baby’ and while neutrals were a style trend there is much more colour appearing in interior design. We've gathered the insights from the minds of design experts to find out their favorite low-lift ways to add some colour to a beige nursery.

  • Choose colourful furniture

Tip #6: Storage, storage, storage!

Having a newborn is tough enough that you will want to think about how you can organise your space to change nappies, throw out the dirty ones, wipe bottoms clean, change clothes all on very little sleep.

Things can get messy very quickly but creating a space that still looks great can help to maintain a sense of calm, after all your baby will appreciate a parent who isn’t struggling too much.

Having storage options like draws, cupboards or open storage containers are great to hide the mess and grab what you need in a flash.

Also don’t be afraid to be creative with storage options, think tiered cake stands, bread containers or baskets that you may have around the house.
