Is Plastic Dinnerware really Safe? What you shoud know.
As a mum of two, I know how quickly kids' dinnerware becomes part of everyday life. Plates get dropped, reheated, stacked in the dishwasher, packed for picnics and taken on every family adventure.
Like many families, we used plastic kids' plates for years because they were practical, lightweight and almost impossible to break.
But the more I researched what our family was eating from every day, the more I realised there were better options.
Learning about microplastics and the growing research into plastic exposure made me question the products we were bringing into our home. Studies have found microplastics in human blood, lungs and even placentas, and while scientists are still working to understand the long-term health impacts, it encouraged us to reduce unnecessary plastic where we could.
That journey became the inspiration behind Elavoland.
We wanted dinnerware that was beautiful enough to leave on the table, durable enough for busy family life, and made from thoughtfully selected materials that parents could feel good about using every day.
Why We Made the Switch
Children use their plates every single day. While food-grade plastics are approved for their intended use, many parents are choosing to reduce plastic in their homes where practical.
For us, it wasn't about fear—it was about making simple swaps that aligned with the way we wanted to live.
We wanted dinnerware that was:
Made from plant-based materials
Free from BPA, phthalates, melamine and PFAS
Independently laboratory tested
Durable enough for everyday family life
Beautiful enough that both adults and children love using it
Understanding Microplastics
Microplastics are tiny plastic particles created as larger plastic products break down over time. Researchers have detected them in our air, water, food and even within the human body.
Scientists are continuing to investigate what this means for long-term health, but many families are choosing to reduce their exposure where they can.
Replacing frequently used household items—like children's dinnerware—is one simple place to start.
Choosing Safer Kids' Dinnerware
Not all "eco-friendly" dinnerware is created equal.
Many products marketed as bamboo or plant-based actually use melamine resin to bind natural fibres together. While these products may look natural, they're not completely plastic-free.
That's why it's important to read the material composition rather than relying on the packaging alone.
At Elavoland, we believe parents deserve complete transparency about what their children's dinnerware is made from.
